The Beginning

The process begins with random items, unknown to the students, which are placed in front of them. From there, students are challenged to create something that they can relate to their mathematical knowledge. In this first Junk Box Creation, we were working on fraction operations. Students were challenged to create something and relate it to their knowledge of fraction operations. Specifically, the state of Texas asks sixth graders to know about adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers and also dealing with simplifying fractions and making mixed numbers from improper fractions.
